Making pickles is one of my favorite late summer activities. It is always fun to make something so yummy from things that we grew ourselves in our garden: cukes, dill and garlic.
Pickles are a whole family affair around here.
Anna got all the dill off the stems and put it in the sterilized jars:
Josie collected the seeds from the head of the plant and sprinkled them in the jar:
By the time our cukes are ready for pickling our dill is sparse and mostly gone to seed. But I have read that the seeds actually have more flavor than the dill, so we added a lot of them to each jar and that did the trick. (My mother-in-law also told me you can freeze the dill earlier in the season until you are ready to use it)I sliced the cucumbers and and garlic and Ruthie loaded them into the jars:
Pour the boiling brine solution over the top (1 part vinegar : 3 parts water), let sit for 24hrs in the fridge and voila!Yummy pickles to eat!

I love that everybody has a job, and that yo ucaught each of these jobs on camera. We miss you! ! ! (On an unrelated topic, we almost burned down our house today. We left a pot of beans on high, and while we were gone the fire department came. They used their huge fans to blow smoke out of all the house after dealing with the pot. But when we got back our entire house smells like smoke. In fact, the clothes I've been wearing for a few minutes in this house already smell like smoke. Thanks kind neighbors for reporting the billowing smoke out the windows!) -Michael
How long do your pickles last? I made some this summer, kept them in the fridge and expected them to last a long time, but they started turning ... funny. Not quite right. So now I'm wondering if I just had incorrect expectations, or if I did something wrong!
You're making me hungry! I will be there next summer and maybe we can make a jar of pickles to share.

I love pickles! And I agree with Michael, I like how everyone has a job to do. Lesson to learn: even making pickles can be fun... when everybody participates :)
Yummy pickles. I remember making pickles when I was in middle school. Makes the house smell so good. :)
